Another Set of Figures
for God and for You, Also Me
by David Wright

God is the Sun & we are large grasshoppers, sizzling

     beneath the biblical sky

Or the Lord is the Grove of Oaks & we are the diligent

stupid squirrels in the fall, our dumb jaws

full of the seeds of other gods

Or the Divine is the Lion and you are the gazelle

outrunning Him, or the other gazelles,

     until it turns night

I am the fish & God is both Net & Knife,

to catch & filet me clean open my gut

to see what I have devoured

Or I am the leavings of dung along a trail,

& you too are as a pile of shit

& Great God is the Wolf, the Bear leaving us

     to mark the darkened way
